What we do

As noted in the 'European Strategy for more Growth and Jobs in Coastal and Maritime Tourism' (COM(2014)86), the sector faces the following challenges:

  • to improve knowledge by addressing current data gaps & incompatibilities
  • to address demand volatility by capturing the potential of tourists who can travel in low season and adapting to demographic change
  • to overcome sector fragmentation by sharing best practices between Member States, regions and stakeholders and achieving synergies
  • to address environmental pressures by improving resource efficiency, waste and pollution prevention and promoting eco-audit schemes

In order to overcome these criticalities, SIROCCO uses value chain analysis, policy coherence analysis and foresight as its main methodological components.

The Project will produce the following  Technical Deliverables:

  • Med Cruise Maritime Tourism Database. A database integrating all available & collected data on cruise maritime tourism in the MED
  •  Current state and future challenges of cruise maritime tourism in the MED. A Report presenting a SWOT analysis of cruise maritime tourism in the MED and the main challenges to be addressed
  • MED cruise tourism foresight. This  deliverable will identify key factors influencing the evolution of cruise maritime tourism and will present future scenarios for 2 time horizons: 2025 and 2030
  • Sustainable cruise tourism certification system. The deliverable will present a certification system for sustainable cruise maritime/coastal tourism value chains
